Relay for Life is charity event in aid of Cancer Research UK, where teams take it in turns to walk around a small track for 24 hours. Team Rapid and Firefly joined Ascot’s ‘Right Royal’ Relay this year as our annual fundraiser of 2017.
On the morning of Saturday 22nd, the teams started arriving at Ascot Racecourse for what was set to be a challenging 24 hours. Gazebo’s and tents were erected, and the opening ceremony began at midday – opening the Relay for 2017. Once this was finished the walking began…and so did the rain! It continued to rain until approximately 8pm that evening making the conditions cold and muddy for all involved! We had a total of 13 participants, taking it in turn to walk in shifts throughout the day; leaving 4 of the team to tackle the overnight shift into the morning.
After a tiring and wet 24 hours the closing ceremony took place at 12pm on Sunday to mark the end of Relay for Life 2017. Each team member received a medal and the total amount of money raised was announced on stage. The 2017 Relay raised just over £116,000, taking total for the last 10 years to the £1,000,000 target – a phenomenal amount of money for Cancer Research UK.
